Free Speech on Campus

Harshil Joshi, Athens, GA

In recent months, the idea of “free speech” on college campuses has come under intense scrutiny. Across the country, students are speaking out—about the rollback of DEI programs, systemic injustices, and institutional accountability—and many are facing backlash for doing so. Universities often position themselves as champions of open discourse. Yet in practice, student voices are frequently subject to surveillance, censorship, or disciplinary action, especially when their demands challenge the status quo.

Student activism has long been a driving force for progress on college campuses. Today’s organizers are continuing that legacy, confronting pressing social issues with clarity and urgency. But rather than being encouraged, many are being silenced, particularly those from historically marginalized communities.

If free speech is a core value, it must apply equitably. Supporting dialogue means making room for discomfort, critique, and change, not only when it is convenient, but especially when it is necessary.
